Pico Rivera became an incorporated city in 1958 after merging four unincorporated communities Whittier Junction , Montebello Gardens ,Pico Heights and West Whittier .

Pio Pico was thought about designating part of his Rancho Paso de Bartolo as Pueblo del Ro, but he never did. Instead the name was used by one of Picos agents, Albert G. Beckwith who purchased a piece of land here in 1876 and named it after his hometown, Pico in Vermont.
