Livermore, California has a rich and vibrant sporting history that dates back over 150 years. One of the earliest recorded sporting events in Livermore was a horse race held at what is now Robertson Park (3200 Robertson Park Rd) on July 4th, 1869. This event brought together many notable figures from around the region including William Mendenhall who owned much of presentday Livermore. In 1882, baseball became an established sport within the community with team names such as The Turquoise Giants and The Lone Stars. Nearly all games were played on fields located between L Street and Second Street near downtown (L St & Second St). During these early days when there werent any bleachers or lights available yet players would simply plant poles or trees for shade instead.
Another significant sporting tradition is rodeo which began in Livermore over a century ago. Today its home to one of the largest rodeos in Northern California The Cow Palace Rodeo Series which takes place annually towards end May/beginning June at Robertson Park.
